Course content:

Two types of earthquake interpretation - mechanical waves through the Earth's material or oscillations of the entire Earth. Mechanics of the continuous medium as a basic tool in the study of earthquakes. A complete system of equations of motion of the deformable Earth. Earthquake Direct and Reverse Task; complementarity of each of these tasks with the corresponding task for the seismic source. Overview of the existing standardized physical models of the Earth's interior. 

Review of the methods of trial solutions of the inverse problem for the earthquake interpreted as mechanical waves, with conditions for their applicability: ray theory, diffraction theory, finite difference numerical method, finite element numerical method, wave theories for random medium, perturbation methods, method of eigenfunctions of heterogeneous area, method of equivalent homogeneous body; asymptotic solutions and matrix methods for surface waves. 

Review of the methods of trial solutions of the inverse problem for the earthquake interpreted as oscillations of the whole Earth: the method of free oscillations after a small perturbation of a layered spherical-symmetric heterogeneous self-gravitating ball, numerical integrations on trial solutions for free oscillations of simplified ball models.
