Course content:  

  • Linear dielectrics: induction polarizability, ionic polarizability, orientational polarizability, relationship between particle polarizability and macroscopic properties of dielectrics, Clausius-Masoti and Lorentz-Lorentz equation; classification of dielectrics; complex dielectric constant and dielectric losses; dielectric losses and relaxation time; resonant dispersion and absorption; dielectric breakdown
  • Active dielectrics: electret effect in dielectrics; piezoelectric effect in dielectrics, pyroelectric effect; ferroelectric effect and ferroelectrics; physical mechanisms for the occurrence of ferroelectricity; anti-ferroelectrics.
  • Magnetic properties of solids: origin of elementary magnetic dipoles; magnetic field in magnets; diamagnetism; free electron gas paramagnetism; phenomenological theory of ferromagnetism; ferrimagnetism;
  • Superconductivity: Meissner effect; critical magnetic field and critical current; elements of the theory of superconductivity; stationary and non-stationary Josephson effect; quantization of magnetic flux in a superconductor;
  • Defects in crystals: classification of defects; point defects in crystals; line defects in crystals, dislocations 
  • Transport phenomena in crystals: Boltzmann transport equation; relaxation time; temperature dependence of electrical resistance; energy and charge transport in crystals; thermoelectric phenomena in metals; galvanomagnetic effects of Ettingshausen, Nernst and the occurrence of magnetoresistance.
