Course content:  

  • Experimental data processing: assessment of measurement uncertainty, interpolation, fitting.
  • Time standard: atomic clock.
  • Voltage standards: Josephson junction array (primary standard), Zener diode (secondary standard).
  • Resistance standards: Quantum Hall effect standard (primary standard), standard resistors (secondary standard)
  • Mass standard: watt balance.
  • Resistance measurement: measurement of large resistances, potentiometric method (comparison).
  • Measurement of current strength: intermediate determination of current strength, measurement of large current strengths.
  • Frequency and phase measurement.
  • Measurement of impedance, capacitance and inductance.
  • Analog/digital and digital/analog conversion.
  • Temperature scales: common temperature scales, instruments for measuring temperature, temperature scales (thermometric substances and thermometric properties), absolute temperature scales, international temperature scales.
  • Thermoelectric temperature measurement: thermoelectromotive voltage, thermodynamic relations, dependence of thermoelectromotive voltage on temperature, thermocouples, correction for reference coupling, types of thermocouples, construction of thermocouple probes, calibration of fixed point thermocouples, calibration of thermocouples by comparison, methods of interpolation.
  • Optical and radiation pyrometry: approximate black bodies, black body standards, total radiation pyrometers, calibration of total radiation pyrometers, expansion of the temperature scale, temperatures of non-absolute black bodies, spectral radiation pyrometers, calibration of radiation pyrometers.
  • Resistance thermometry: construction of resistance thermometers, calibration of platinum resistance thermometer, other types of resistance thermometers.
  • Calorimetry: measurement of the amount of heat and heat capacity, water calorimeter, bomb calorimeter, aneroid calorimeter, adiabatic calorimeter, electric calorimeter, radiation calorimeter, determination of thermal properties by relaxation method.
